Children Learn About Kansas's Pioneer Past The 8th annual Pioneer Day took place on May 13, 2009, at the Ellis County Historical Society Museum. The event was truly an outdoor educational experience for school age children. Hundreds of children joined in the fun to learn about Kansas’s pioneer past. The Ellis County Historical Society Museum located at 100 West 7th Street hosted the event. Some of the events included shelling corn, churning butter and spinning wool; all of which were basic activities that pioneer women would have endured. Children witnessed grooming techniques on live horses that Pioneer men would have completed in daily chores. Other activities included relay and three-legged races. Co-director of the museum, Sharon Behrman, stated “The activity was a free public event and all the children enjoyed an entire day of learning and fun.” In addition to the educational booths and demonstrations, children had the opportunity to explore The Volga German Haus, the harness shop and a fire engine, which was made possible by the Hays Firefighters. “We add more educational activities and booths every year,” stated Behrman. Behrman was quick to thank the volunteers that so graciously donated their time to make the event possible. “We appreciate them so much, our volunteers. The event would not be possible without them,” stated Behrman.
