Valentine's Day

For many of us, Valentine’s Day is just another day. For some, it’s a day to spend time with our significant other. For others, trying to make it that special day takes some preparation, creative strategy, and thought. What does a person get for that special someone? To answer this question, I went downtown to get some advice.

“Valentine’s Day is one of the busier days we have here at C.S. Post and Co. We normally sell a lot of fresh flowers - mostly red roses. Other items that are always great gifts are chocolates, jewelry, bath products and candles,” said Sandy Keller, store manager.

According to several websites, with being the second most celebrated holiday, Valentine’s Day is a big deal for local businesses in the Chestnut Street District. With the busy season under their belt, store owners sold a variety of items that contributed to this year’s success.

“The Chestnut Street District had everything from fancy dining to candies, jewelry, and memorable gifts. Just strolling the streets visiting the different shops was a great way to get ideas for guys and girls,” said Chelsey Fisher, Downtown Hays Development Assistant.

To simplify the Valentine’s Day shopping, Simply Charmed provided a one-stop shopping experience where with any $50 Pandora purchase, customers also received a 12-ounce box of Russell Stover chocolates and a Hallmark Valentine card to make their gift complete.

Several restaurants in the Chestnut Street District also did their part to make Valentine’s Day a special day for their customers. “Valentine’s Day at Gella’s could be summed up in one word—Perfect! We served Filet Oscar, Beef Tenderloin with Fresh Crab meat on top and a Bernaise sauce drizzled over the top. Our Valentine’s Day beer was the Heartbreak Ale and dessert was a Red Velvet Cupcake, which was by far the biggest hit of the night,” said Cortney Finnesy, General Manager Gella’s Diner and Lb. Brewing. “We also had live music from Mud Bone later on in the evening and the crowd didn’t dwindle. So far, 2008 has been a great year for us and we couldn’t be more grateful to the Hays community for their continued support!”

All together, the holiday turned out to be another special day in the Chestnut Street District. “Valentine’s Day is not just a day to receive, it’s a special day to show all the people who are special to you how much they really mean in your life,” said Dee Hand, an Administrative Assistant for Fort Hays State University’s Political Science Department.

With that being said why not celebrate your valentine every day? We don’t need just one day to show appreciation. Every day is a holiday. You can always find something special in downtown Hays to show your appreciation.
